ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

POSITION SUMMARY

Working closely with the global design team, the Freelance Data Visualization Designer will transform complex data sets, quantitative, and qualitative analysis into clear and compelling visual stories. Our visual communication function is a crucial component in ensuring that CPI’s work is well understood and resonates with our target audience of policymakers, regulators, financial professionals, investors, and other key stakeholders in the climate finance and policy ecosystem.  

Location: Remote

Reports to: Senior Design Associate 

Contract: through end of 2026, with possibility of renewal  

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with design team members to conceptualize and execute data visualization of CPI work, including charts, graphs, tables, maps, infographics, and other data visualization approaches to interpret our finance and policy analysis  
  • Conduct quality assurance and review all data visualizations to ensure accuracy, usability, and adherence to brand, style, and accessibility guidelines  


COMPETENCIES & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

Essential

  • Proven experience in data visualization and graphic design, with progressive multi-years’ experience or demonstrable equivalent skills  
  • Ability to turn technical economics and finance information into accessible visual insights for investors, policymakers, and other stakeholders  
  • A strong affinity for numbers and quantitative data, with ability to clearly communicate the reasoning behind design choices  
  • A keen eye for detail and accuracy  
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel  
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Adobe Illustrator 

Desirable

  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Flourish, Tableau and/or other similar online data visualization tools  
  • Intermediate proficiency with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frameworks such as D3 to deliver interactive data visualization 
  • UX/UI experience in designing interactive data stories, and dashboards 
  • Mapping and cartography skills and tools, such as ArcGIS  
  • Experience with visual data journalism  
  • Background or understanding of climate policy, climate finance, and/or sustainable development  
  • Video production skills to create animated data visualizations (using tools such as Adobe After Effects)

This is a freelance position that is compensated by the hour on a project-to-project basisWorkload will generally be heavier during our busy season of September – November, and lower during other months of the year.
